Urban Legal Recruitment is pleased to be working with our valued client, a leading national law firm, in their search for a Coordinator, Student & Associate Professional Development to join their Calgary office for a one-year contract.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced legal or professional services professional who enjoys working closely with students, associates, lawyers and firm leadership. The successful candidate will play an important role in attracting, developing and retaining exceptional legal talent while helping create an outstanding experience throughout the student and associate lifecycle.

Working closely with the Manager, Student & Associate Professional Development, the Coordinator will support recruitment, onboarding, professional development, performance management, engagement and retention initiatives for the Calgary office. This position offers a wonderful combination of program coordination, relationship building and hands-on involvement in the development of future and current lawyers.

Key Responsibilities

Student Programs

  • Support the Calgary Student Committee throughout the full student recruitment cycle, including recruitment strategy, on-campus engagement, interview coordination, offer management and hire-back processes.

  • Coordinate summer and articling student programs, including onboarding, orientation, training, practice group allocations, mentoring, performance feedback and social programming.

  • Support student secondment opportunities and related client partnerships.

  • Ensure student recruitment activities comply with applicable Law Society requirements, recruitment guidelines and local protocols.

  • Build strong relationships with students and help ensure an engaging, supportive and positive experience throughout their time with the firm.

Associate Programs

  • Support practice groups with associate recruitment, including coordinating recruitment activities and maintaining information relating to lateral hires.

  • Assist with onboarding, orientation and integration programs for new associates.

  • Coordinate and monitor local performance management activities, including evaluation cycles, feedback processes and goal setting.

  • Assist with HRIS administration and information management for students and associates.

  • Work closely with associates, lawyers, practice group leaders and Human Resources to support successful integration, engagement and career development.

Professional Development

  • Coordinate the local implementation of national learning, professional development, diversity and inclusion, and wellness initiatives.

  • Track and analyze program metrics, feedback and market trends to support future planning and continuous improvement.

  • Coordinate student recruitment and career-related website content and initiatives.

  • Prepare and manage budgets relating to student, associate and professional development programs.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with law schools, professional associations and other key stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with colleagues locally and nationally on programs and initiatives that support the continued development and success of students and associates.

What You Bring

The ideal candidate is polished, highly organized and relationship-focused, with the confidence to interact comfortably with students, associates, partners and senior leadership.

You will bring:

  • Approximately 5 years of relevant experience, ideally within legal recruitment, student development, professional development, Human Resources or a related professional services environment.

  • Previous experience within the legal industry is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of the Canadian law student recruitment cycle and the legal profession.

  • Experience working in a collaborative, multi-office environment.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to build trusted relationships at all levels.

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple programs, priorities and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Sound judgment and confidence when handling time-sensitive or sensitive matters.

  • High emotional intelligence, professionalism and discretion.

  • A proactive, resourceful and adaptable approach.

  • The ability to work independently while remaining highly collaborative with colleagues across the organization.

  • A genuine commitment to creating an inclusive, supportive and engaging environment for students and associates.
