Legal Assistant, Municipal Law

Our client is a highly respected Alberta firm who is looking for a motivated and dynamic Legal Assistant to work in the Municipal department in their Calgary office.  This firm is very team oriented and looking for the right person to join them!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review and prepare routine correspondence, reporting letters, legal documents and tribunal pleadings.
  • Maintain efficient filing (principally electronic), file diarization and calendar systems for senior lawyer. 
  • Coordination and management of lawyers’ calendar and appointments, deadlines and billings.
  • Communicate with client contacts on routine matters.
  • Conduct Tax, Land Title Court House and other legal searches.
  • Execute some Land Title Office registrations and filings.
  • Liaise with legal assistants, paralegals, lawyers and clients on file progress.
  • General administrative duties including scanning documents, conducting internal conflict searches and opening and closing files. 
  • Overall management of senior lawyer’s practice. 

Key Competencies:

  • An understanding of administrative law and general litigation, experience in municipal and environmental law practices would be beneficial.
  • Excellent computer skills with experience in Adobe PDF, MS Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Strong attention to detail, oral and written communication skills, including strong proof reading, grammar and editing skills.
  • Ability to efficiently manage time, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Follow instructions with minimal supervision and be able to thrive in a fast-paced, professional team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact confidently with paralegals, lawyers and clients.
  • Skilled in the use of dictation programs, including BigHand Go.
  • Experienced with paperless files.  
  • A high level of professionalism in dealing with clients and other contacts. 
  • Strong teamwork skills.

 Education/Experience Required:

  • Graduate of a recognized Legal Assistant, Paralegal or Law Clerk program preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ legal assistant experience.
